Five Must-See Films Starring Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore has been in several films that were nominated for Best Picture. Unfortunately, she has also been in some duds. As a result, we decided to rate all of her movies. Moore portrays Clarice Starling in this updated version of Brian De Palma’s classic, long after she has hunted down Hannibal Lecter. It’s a thrilling game of cat and mouse.
1. Carrie
A high-school Cinderella story with telekinetic powers, Carrie is a terrifyingly effective horror movie with a great climax and a truly tense prom scene. While some may be skeptical of Julianne Moore as a demure, dignified high school girl with a prickly attitude, she is convincing enough to make us believe that this character is a real person with a lot on her mind and is just trying to navigate a confusing world.
In this flixtor film, Julianne plays Carol White, a dissatisfied housewife who develops mysterious medical issues that doctors can’t find any trace of. This is the first of many collaborations between Moore and director Todd Haynes and features a truly powerful performance that explores the conflict between scientific research and alternative healing methods. It’s a tearjerker. You’ll be glad you saw it. –Eddie Rothman.
2. Blindness
A harrowing tale of the end of the world, this film finds Julianne Moore in top form as a woman who can see the blindness that is quickly spreading through the population. Director Todd Haynes combines a sense of hard truth with an old-fashioned tearjerker, and Moore delivers a powerhouse performance that shows off her rare ability to slip effortlessly from commercially viable movies into art house masterpieces.
Saramago’s novel is a terrifying study of the way the mind can lose all meaning in the face of fear. But Meirelles – despite his stellar history with visual imagery and stark truth – is unable to fully bring this story to life. The film’s only saving grace is Moore, who carries the load as the doctor’s take-charge wife and one of the only people who can see what is happening around her.
3. Laws of Attraction
Laws of Attraction is a movie about the laws of attraction and manifestation. It follows a man who discovers that communicating with the universe and receiving a response back isn’t a coincidence. Based on the Conversations with God series by Neale Donald Walsch, this movie features some interesting ideas about life and the universe.
Whether you’re dealing with dead-end jobs, one-sided relationships or negative friendships, this film reminds us that we can use the law of attraction to manifest love and success in our lives. It just takes a little faith and positive thinking. This is a fun and inspirational movie that the whole family can enjoy.
4. Maps to the Stars
Director David Cronenberg takes a very dark look at the narcissism and egomania of Hollywood celebrity culture with this film, starring Julianne Moore as a troubled actress who is consumed with getting back the role she originated. It features a strong cast including Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), John Cusack, Carrie Fisher, Cosmopolis’ Sarah Gadon, and Evan Bird.
It’s hard to convey the full horror of this movie in a two-minute trailer, but it looks like it’ll be a compelling ride. Watch it below and be sure to check out the rest of the movie when it hits theaters this February. It’s sure to be a must-see for fans of Moore and the rest of this powerhouse cast.
